The beloved mascot
of the Cotuit
Mosquito Yacht Club, this gaff-rigged,
flat-bottomed "one-design" sailboat
is one of the oldest continuously sailed fleets of one-design
racing boats in the world.
Cotuit Bay is the
location where very devoted and enthusiastic CMYC members
compete for a place in the Club Champs marathon held
the end
of the summer. No boring triangles, Cotuit Skiff
race courses are set
using geographical landmarks which
can spread the 30+ fleet from one
end of Dead Neck to
another.
The colorful tableau
can be a quite a navigational challenge for power boats
and the weekend fisherman as the extremely competitive
skippers work their decades of knowledge for the leading
spot in the fleet. The wooden boat, which celebrated its
100th anniversary in 2007, provides the opportunity for
children to develop a feel for the tiller and for day-sailing
in the protected waters around the three bays between
Cotuit and Wianno.
